Flight Attendant

From the start, some passengers knew something was amiss. The flight attendant had asked them if the plane was in Houston.
It was in Dallas.
Then came dueling announcements from two flight attendants, the first saying the plane had mechanical problems; the second assuring passengers everything was OK.
Then, alarmingly, the increasingly excited flight attendant repeatedly declared over the public address system that she was no longer responsible for the safety of the plane, and that it was going to crash.
The whole time, the plane continued rolling toward the runway.
The Friday morning incident ended only after fellow crew members scuffled with their colleague, and when passengers helped restrain her, according to passengers interviewed by CNN.
Authorities said the flight was delayed, and that two flight attendants - including the agitated attendant -- were taken to a Dallas hospital for treatment.

Obama Hails Jobs Report

President Obama seized on a new jobs report as evidence that "the economy is getting stronger" as he pitched a set of manufacturing initiatives in territory key to his reelection chances.
The key now, our job now, is to keep this economic engine churning," Obama said from the floor of a jet engine manufacturing plant in Petersburg, Va. "We can't go back to the same policies that got us into this mess."
Obama's trip, deemed official and not campaign business, came hours after the Labor Department announced that the economy had added 227,000 jobs in February, a stronger showing than economists had expected but not enough to move the 8.3% unemployment rate.

The Christian family group called OneMillionMoms.com announced Thursday that it's backing off a nationwide boycott of J.C. Penney. The group -- affiliated with the ultraconservative American Family Assn. -- was upset that the retailer recently hired the openly gay talk show host as its new spokeswoman. OneMillionMoms.com argued that DeGeneres, as a gay woman, was a poor representative of family values.
The campaign belly-flopped after numerous critics attacked the effort -not just the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation advocacy group, but also some commentators often sympathetic to conservative causes, such as Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, who compared it to McCarthy-like blacklisting. J.C. Penney also issued a statement reaffirming its support for DeGeneres.

Shell Deploys Ships to Clean Oil Spill

Shell is deploying ships and mobilising planes on Thursday to clean up an oil spill at a major field off Nigeria, the company says, with some 40,000 barrels estimated to have leaked into the sea.
The leak that began Tuesday has been stopped, according to Shell, and dispersants are being deployed to clean up the crude spilled at the field some 120 kilometres off Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer and an OPEC member.
Production has halted at Shell's Bonga field, which has a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day, due to the spill.
Shell has said "less than 40,000 barrels" leaked, while Nigerian authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.

Malaria Blamed for 655,000 Deaths in 2010

Malaria caused the death of an estimated 655,000 people last year, with 86 percent of victims children aged under five, World Health Organisation figures showed on Tuesday.
The figure marked a five percent drop in deaths from 2009.
Africa accounted for 91 percent of deaths and 81 percent of the 216 million cases worldwide in 2010.
In its annual World Malaria Report for 2011, the WHO hailed as a "major achievement" a 26 percent fall in mortality rates since 2000 despite being well short of its 50 percent target.
The UN health agency aims to eradicate malaria deaths altogether by the end of 2015 and reduce the number of cases by 75 percent on 2000 levels.

US Court Enters Fray Over

A US federal judge is set to hear arguments Tuesday about the government's decision to deny over-the-counter access of emergency contraception to women of all ages, as part of a decade-long legal battle.

Federal Judge Edward Korman will hear from the US Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Reproductive Rights, one week after the US government blocked access without a prescription to people under 17.

Women's health groups led by the Center for Reproductive Rights have been urging the FDA to make emergency contraception more widely available to young girls for the past 10 years by filing citizen's petitions with the FDA.

Women's health advocates argue that US regulators have placed politics above science by restricting access to the morning-after pill which can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Japan Launches Spy Satellite Video

Japan successfully put a spy satellite in orbit Monday and is expected to complete its network of intelligence gathering with other satellites for launch next year.
The Japanese space agency, JAXA, and the launch of the remote southern island of Tanegashima went off without a hitch and satellites equipped with radar is working properly. The launch of the second year, after a successful take-off in September.
